Moving, smoking, programming, stuff

Today we’re gonna finish up at the old apartment. Cleaning. After today, we will never be going back. Out with the old, in with the new.

The DNS refreshed and now I’m finished migrating between my old host and my new one – Kattare. The JSP/Servlet community is hot on this host and in particular it is the home of Blogging Roller. My old ISP, while feature rich, had performance problems. So far I’m blown away by how fast MovableType seems here.

Now, after all this moving, I can get back to, in my private time, working on Cofax. Lots of documentation to write, including thank yous. A new release should be out shortly. I can also get back to my experimenting. That means I’ll hopefully get a chance to try out Roller real soon now.

Not only that – but I can get back to working with my recorder 🙂 I have tons of songs I can finally share.

That fire did a real number on my schedule.

Thanks for the support on the smokes. Still going strong. It will be one week at midnight tonight. The worst part of it now are the waves of… saddness… that I am experiencing. Real heavy weights on my chest. I know they are smoking related and should disappear soon. But they really suck.

Sleeping Angels makes the news again

“Sept. 11 brought the family together, ironically. It was like a another Thanksgiving,” said the boys’ father, Dante Martino. Four days later, tragedy would strike again. Hunter James, while sleeping in his crib in his Upper Moreland home, died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or the unexpected death of an apparently healthy baby – usually between 2 and 4 months old – for reasons that cannot be explained, even after a thorough investigation.

Katie and Dante Martino were devastated. But from their grief and pain came hope and help for others, in the form of the Sleeping Angels Fund, an organization dedicated to helping financially needy families pay for funeral arrangements after the sudden death of their infants.

A while back I quit, now I’m quit again

Just about two or three months ago, I went two weeks without a smoke. I went to a bar, and almost ended up in a fight with an Airforce pilot who was disrespecting my sister in law who told him to scram. He started to put her down. Which pissed me off. The bartender threw him out. Lucky for me. I woulda got my ass kicked.

Anyway, it’s 8:26 and I know I’ve beaten it today. And I look forward to beating it tomorrow.

Anyone who says this is easy is out of their skulls.

10 Tips on Writing the Living Web

Read them from Mark Bernsein’s article at A List Apart. via dive into mark.

They explain alot on the success of Dave Winer, Glenn Reynolds, Andrew Sullivan, and Shelley Powers actually. The exemplify all of the principals below. hmmmm… how do I standup to the ten tips?

  1. Write for a reason – lost that when I shut down PhillyFuture and PhillyStories.
  2. Write often – don’t do that.
  3. Write tight – Ok… got that down.
  4. Make good friends – Definately great friends 🙂
  5. Find good enemies – Who want’s to be my ‘enemy’? Anyone wanna pick a fight with me? Bring it on! Actually – the responsibility is on me to post on topics that people feel so passionate about they want to argue. I freakout at website to website arguing so I kinda avoid it. I much rather argue in private e-mail arguments. So I’m at a loss here.
  6. Let the story unfold – errrr… see 1. and 2.
  7. Stand up, speak out – ok. I do that.
  8. Be sexy – Well my longer pieces in my sidebar are personal, but generally I don’t post about my personal life here cause it’s personal. Ahh that was a fun sentence.
  9. Use your archives – Check.
  10. Relax! – Check.

I think it all starts on point 1. How do I reclaim that? Certainly not with my past failed experiments. When you write for a reason, you will want to post frequently, and you will care so much about the topic that your posts will find supporters and enemies on their own. You’re bound to use your personal history to embellish your posts as well. So it all starts there.
