Opie and Anthony canceled

WNEW-FM has issued the following press release:

Based on recent events, The Opie and Anthony Show has been cancelled, and will be replaced by other programming beginning tomorrow.

Westwood One, Opie and Anthony’s syndicator has also cancelled the program. The program aired on 18 stations across the country.

Also on Thursday, the top U.S. communications regulator ordered an investigation into complaints that the shock jocks allegedly broadcast a live, eyewitness account of a couple having sex in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. This report lead to today’s cancellation.

    I would have bet they would keep traveling south, Philly next. But they got fired from Infinity broadcasting too. That means they are completely out now.

    What gets me is why Howard never mentions these two on his show.

  3. First of all… if you want to listen to rock, go to MMR. O&A were friggin’ funny. If you were stuck on 76 or 95 on your way home from the city, they made the drive, not so bad. As for Infinity, I hope they live to regret their decision. I hope O&A do get picked up by another station, like MMR or y100.
    The reason Howard never mentions these 2 on his program is because he knows he is washed up… old….stale. And these guys are fresh. I know Howard paved the way for those like O&A, but he has lost his umph.
    I miss O&A. I hope their rather famous saying (at least to their listeners) is true:
    Opie & Anthony ALWAYS win in the end!!!!! I just hope someone has the balls to hire them!

  4. I’m sure they will get hired eventually when things calm down.

    I think MMR and Y100 are ClearChannel stations so that’s not gonna happen.

    The thing you gotta know is it won’t take balls to hire them…..it will take advertisers.

    And knowing the trend of things… they’ll come around.

What they did while funny was probably wrong morally but compared to the things the catholic church has been dealing with, this is the fighthey wanna fight? Gimme a break ! O&A will be back and when they do I and everyone I know will be listening and thats all those ignorant advertisers should care about instead of acting like they have all these morals (remember the Kris Reeves add during super bowl) I hope Infinity and WNEW both go under because when the Boys get back on the air..the little ratings they did have will be gone !

  6. O&A Kicked ass and I totally agree that Howard Stern is an ass for not supporting these guys. I think he is acting just like Don Immuse when HOward was just starting out on WNBC Radio. Howard has become the new Don Immuse, an old washed up dick head who just cares about him self. Lets just hope O&A never end up like that. I hope O&A comes back and destroys Howard and the horse he road in on!

    I think your close to the truth their Sledge. BTW though – it’s not the entire Catholic Church that wants to fight with O&A. It a group of people from within it. You’re right. The Church itself has way too much to be dealing with.

  8. I recently read (on foundry music, O&A’s site) that they weren’t actually FIRED, just that the show has been cancelled. They’re still WNEW (NYC station) employees. Maybe that means that there’s hope for a reappearance soon.

  11. Two Boston bars want to boycott and protest Sam Adams because of their involvement w/ “Sex for Sam”. Let them know that they should mind their own business and we will boycott them.   12. O&A were pretty funny. Viacom, Infinity et al are a bunch of assholes, happy to profit from controversial personalities, but quick to give them the boot when the whiny bible-thumpers/bunny-huggers/etc start pissing and moaning.

    To paraphrase Dennis Miller, the Catholic Church is upset over this because the Church is not a place for sex– unless it’s between priests and young boys.

  14. This kind of thing is typical in this country. While I agree that what they did was wrong I don’t think that it warrented them being booted off the air. But I guess that someone had to take the fall.

  15. I’m a fan of both Stern and O&A. Anyone who was a fan of O&A would have to agree that someday they would go alittle too far and piss off the wrong group or person. Indeed, they did. I’m not defending howard, but Stren made it to main stream radio, raised the bar and was problably being held back from doing many things due to the FCC hound dogs. O&A didn’t care and banked on the ratings and took a chance that they were immune from anything and anyone. I’m sorry to see them go. I also don’t see them coming back to radio anytime soon. BTW opie was the evil one.

Look I have been a Howard Stern fan for years but the fact is he is a washed up jackass, I think because he raised the bar for people like O&A to come along, I think he has a responibliy to help O&A out. I mean come on in the past two years Howard has gone against his own words and his ratings have dropped since then. If Howard was smart he would team up with O&A, have them on his show and howard go on the O&A show. Howard should even go the extra mile and help O&A get a job on 92.3k-rock in NYC during afternoon drive, so that they don’t become a threat to his ratings and then when Howard retires from radio who better to pass the torch to O&A who are true fans of his show and look up at him. A perfect example is the connection of O&A and the Ron & Fez show. Howard needs O&A cause frankly he isn’t gettin any funnier… and Chadwick you are a closed minded jackass too, cause Howard is gettin like Imus dumbass wake up and taste the coffee!

( I am assuming none of you really give a shit, but fuckit it {no, that is not Buttfuck it} if you are this far in, you should read it anyway:

    Just a little note to Jim Koch. You were there. You knew what was going on. You had been there for 2 previous “Sex for Sam”. You lame bastard.   19. There is no doubt that some aspects of the recent events were improper, illegal, and distasteful. I will miss the boys until they return, and listen to them when they do so. I was a listener since the guys sucked by every caller pissed off that there was no music on WNEW any more. To be honest, the ratings that they read at time justified their suck status. At least in the beginnning. Of course they do grow on you as far as disgusting, beatiful humor goes. I think they won my utmost respect when they were on after 9/11. They were on that afternoon, the days and weeks that followed, and they helped to bring some sort of clarity to it all. Not once was that mentioned. Enjoy Ron & Fez and Lickass until they make it back. The only reason that I hope that they don’t compete with Howard is because my ride in the afternoon is much longer than my morning commute.

  20. You’re absolutely right. After September eleventh, O+A proved that they could be professional, intelligent, and tactful. Apparently too many people would rather concern themselves with the fact that one group, the Catholic League, decided that a funny, classless, ratings-whore promotion was “anti-Catholic”. Open your eyes stupid. O+A were a lot of things, but if you know anything abou them, you know that they were not doing their promos to be anti catholic. they were just damn funny.

Opie and Anthony might not be anti-Catholic, but their sponsorship and promotion of a contest that led to sex in a Catholic church — someone’s place of worship — make them and their show despicable. I am glad they are off the air. Let that be a lesson to any other sickos who lack any morality whatsoever.

    Do you really want Opie and Anthony advising your little sister to rip off her clothes at the passing of every knucklehead’s car in town? How about their great advice about jumping into bed with some good looking fool she just met at a bar? Let’s not go overboard about their alleged talents either.
    It’s true that Anthony is an excellent imitator of some people, and when he can keep his head out of his own personal toilet long enough, he has had very funny bits. Few and far between. Opie seems to exist mostly to support his partner by taking the attention away from the others unlovely appearance in public, and to announce the names of sponsers so that Anthony can respond: …Sam Adams, yes Opie…..Sam Adams, rereshing..blah..blah, and so on. Like Howard Stern he shines when cutting someone else down. They owe a fortune to Spaz for all the material he afforded them, like the weekend in the city hotel bit. But Spaz was spit out and thrown away like other semi-retarded characters they have attracted as ‘cast members’ to crack on. But to be honest, most of the time was spent talking about them lusting after teenage girls or bringing losers into the studio to strip or eat dog crap or some such idiocy. Too bad they’ll still be pulling a big paycheck from the fools at Infinity. The stunt insulting Ken Stevens made me think they were trying to get fired bacause of a movie deal or something. This was right before the St Pat’s stupidity. It’s too bad they themselves are not stuck in evening drive traffic and forced to wait for the 19 funny minutes of their 4 hour program. That would be justice.

    I agree with ya kingsxkid. But based upon the link canceling them has kinda deflected blame away from those that deserve it – the FCC for not doing it’s job for so long and their employers. So those with power go responsibility free while these two get a temporary stay away from work. They were canceled to cover their bosses asses.

    O&A are scapegoats for their bosses, sponsers, and the FCC. And that dude is where you will find a whole shitload of hypocrites. It was Infinity that canceled them – not people in the Church.

    Like you said – no one should forced to see and hear things.

    But that’s what they did to the families that were in the church that day.

    It wasn’t a situation where you can simply turn the station.

    If it was… well I would probably be right with you being mad about censorship.

    But no one’s being censored here. What is happening is a whole lot of Covering Your Ass, by those that pull O&As strings.

It’s obvious that the Catholic League jumped on this because it was a way for them to rid the troubles of the sex scandals already going on in the church. Opie and Anthony shouldn’t have been fired because of a 350,000 person Catholic group when they had 10,000,000 listeners daily to support them. All of you are speculating on something you have no idea about. Do you even hear the Sex for Sam contest. It goes from Paul Mecurio and his team outside St. Patricks Cathedral and then goes to them being thrown out by a security guard. Absolutely no “blow-by-blow” description as was reported in the media. And guess what dick, there were only a dozen worshippers in the church and none of them saw it, which is the problem with the case against the couple. Only one witness! Therefore can’t be proven in a court of law as long as the couple and Paul Mecurio have the same story. Oh, and one last thing, kingsxkid, you can’t comment on how funny the show is cause you obviously don’t listen. If you would have listened you would’ve known that Spaz resigned, he wasn’t “spit out and thrown away like other semi-retarded characters.”

(The media never has gotten the story right. Most TV stations and newspapers still think Paul Mecurio was the O&A show’s producer.   32. I just wanna know why all these Catholics are leeching onto the Catholic League and going after O&A. It’s obvious the Catholic League was using this to get away from the priests molesting boys in the church. One example of that:
    The Catholic League was taking weeks (usually months) to respond to any of the kid touching going on in the church, but they had gone to the media about Sex for Sam 3 before that days show was even over.
    Another side note, The New York Post just had an article, “Priests Abused 1000+.” Over 1000 people and the Catholic League still hasn’t commented. Oh yeah, this was 1000+ boys abused by priests just in Boston. And this is going on around the country. You Catholic hypocrites!

  33. Don’t rip on Jim Koch just yet, at least not until O&A return. He talked around what the Catholic League wanted to hear. I think after what happened on Sex For Sam 3, every dingle person at WNEW, including O&A, would’ve passed on the contest. Really, was S4S 3 really worth getting fired over!
