  1. Karl,

This is incredible news! Congratulations and take your time on this, the paper will come but soak up all of the knowledge you can as it will enrich you and open your mind even more. I work in academia and take classes and cannot tell you, just being in the atmospehere, you want to become a sponge and learn as much as you can and be involved. We don’t appreciate these things when we are young, but perhaps it is best to do it that way so your past experiences can make you that much more aware of the blessings of education.

I am very proud of you Karl. Again, as I said in another post, you have truly come a long long way, but I am not surprised one bit. I always saw it in you bro. 🙂

  2. Thanks Steve. I’m going to chronicle the experience here a bit, and post plenty of online free sources of college classes that are available these days as well.

I think Villanova might be the beginning – I am seriously looking at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Liberal and Professional Studies.

One step at a time I guess right? Thanks Steve. I’m going to chronicle the experience here a bit, and post plenty of online free sources of college classes that are available these days as well.

  3. Villanova alum here, ISC/CSC class of 2001, just happened to be subscribed to your feed (I think it was via the coding horror linkage). Always surprised and happy to see my alma mater mentioned on random blogs.

I’m assuming you’ll be taking classes in the computer science department. Good group of professors there, have fun.

If you have any say in the matter I’d suggest any classes by Levitin or Way. Also there are some awesome courses from adjunct faculty that are well worth taking if they’re available, especially the advanced OO class from Meketon.

    Just to name a few.

  4. Congrats Karl! Going to school while holding a job *and* a growing family is going to be tough, but you’ll get more out of it than most will ever dream of.

  5. Thanks Albert and Mike.

Mike, considering my working adult status, current experience, and where I am at in terms of life goals, I chose to pursue the BIS in Information Systems. There’s some flexibility in that choice to dip into some of my interests, cognitive science and sociology, while working on a degree that builds off of what I already do (and am happy to grow at).

That potential switch to University of Penn I mentioned will be something I’ll move towards if the commute becomes too much (Villanova is far away from work or home and I need to manage my time closely to be effective), or if the draw of sociology becomes overwhelming (which it may).

In any case, thanks for the good word on Villanova. This is going to be a tremendous investment in time and money (work reimbursement only goes so far) and the choice of school and program was difficult. The folks at Villanova have been wonderful in holding my hand thru the process and I really appreciate it 🙂
